  • 2 cups unbleached white flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar, for sprinkling on top
  • 1/2 cup cold butter (or vegan butter)
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup milk (any kind)
  • 1 tsp milk, for top
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for icing)
  • 2 tbsp melted butter (or vegan butter) (for icing)
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup (for icing)
  • ½ tsp pure vanilla extract (for icing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, sea salt, and 2 tablespoons of sugar.
  3. Cut cold butter into the mixture until it resembles small peas.
  4. Stir in milk and molasses until just combined.
  5. Shape dough into a circle on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper; pat to about 3/4" thick.
  6. Brush with 1 tsp of milk and sprinkle with 1 tsp of sugar.
  7. Cut into wedges and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  8. If desired, whisk together powdered sugar, melted butter (or vegan), maple syrup, and vanilla extract until smooth and spread over warm scones.
